This has to stop!

This needs to stop.

You know those ‘random *genre/name/weapon/anything* generators? I feel like that’s been me with story ideas and elements recently. It’s becoming a small issue of i need to stick to the stories I’m on and not want to start new ones. Well i guess for a short/flash story that’d be fine but i keep thinking large scale. I even started a wiki for a sci-fi venture…

I did make a considerable start on chapter/episode two but since then I’ve decided my wiki for the story needs to be fleshed out some more. Introducing a new destination for my characters has proven more troublesome than i thought. New characters, new locations, new this, new that. I had certain things planned but i way underestimated.

Anyway, i guess unless i somehow manage to fit one of the 50 words or less type stories. I think I’d prefer to move towards at least a flash fiction or two.

Speaking of flash fiction. I have one ready. Well, kind of. It’s another part to City Thirty-Nine (*cough* you can find the first part on here *cough*) except it’s from the perspective of one of the police officers. I feel it adds something different to the story but still technically runs alongside it. Once Dragons is finished I’ll post that one. I’m also looking/thinking about posting some of my “Bandits” story to beta readers to see initial feedback.

Which brings me to my final thoughts… I haven’t had much time for writing recently. Other than starting chapter/episode two and some bits and bobs into one of my wiki guide I haven’t had the time to plan or start the flash story I wanted or get as much as I wanted done for “Bandits”. A shame but that’s teaching for you. I love it, but damn does it take a lot of your time.

Onwards and upwards and look out for Dragons #5, #6, #7 and #7.5 this week! Another flash story in the future! And don’t forget to share with your friends.

World Book Day!

It was World Book Day this week!

I wonder if one day people will be sitting down to read a book I’ve written… You live and dream eh. Anyway, World Book Day; to most this might seem like an ordinary day but this year, for me it was something a bit more interesting.

To begin with this whole “wanting to write a story and get it published” thing really got me thinking about the future and what it might hold. I’d like to believe that one day I could successfully achieve this and possibly more.  *cough cough* Series of short stories based around City Thirty-Nine.

World book day was also much more interesting this year due to this being my first as a teacher. Seeing so many people excited about reading, sharing good stories they’ve read and even a couple bad ones. Having a ‘Drop everything and read for half an hour’ portion of the day was super cool. So many pupils not wanting to bother then suddenly being super engrossed in a book they didn’t want the time to end. Hearing all of my form group being so happy they got to read in a lesson (opposed to in library time once a week) was amazing. There was so much enthusiasm.

I’d say this world book day was a success. At least sitting from my point of view. How did your world book day go? Read anything interesting today? Leave a comment below and let me know.

The only thing left to mention is there’ll be another flash story coming very soon! I think once Dragons is finished I’ll post it. It’s another City Thirty-Nine story except this time from the perspective of a different character… The Mother? One of the Police Officers? A confused neighbour? Well you’ll have to stay tuned and find out soon!

Psst. Dragons #4 is also out on here today… Go check it out.

Lazy Writing Days so far

I really feel like the blog is growing nicely. I’m ecstatic with that. There’ll be a lot of new content coming up also. So aside from the usual Saturday update post you’ll have the following in the near future:

  • Dragons #2 – #7.5 (50 or less series)
  • Flash Story based on Bandits
  • Another 50 or less series

I’m quite excited to share these with you. I really enjoyed writing Dragons. I felt like it’s a mash up of fantasy and Sci-fi. I imagine it read on one of those old pc screens where it’s all black with green text. Similar to a Fallout 3 computer or the one from Lost. Anyway, I feel like it’s a little journey taken along with the two characters Margaret and Josie. If you’re yet to check it out; go along and click ‘Dragons’ at the top of the page. There’s a separate section at the top where they’ll all be collected so it’s easier to find in the future.

That leads me to this. Noticed anything different around here…? That’s right. New theme. I’m digging it. I really wanted one that had a top menu bar rather than an only drop down menu. It feels more visual and easier to find things and I know I’d be more likely to click on menu links if I could see them from the beginning anyway.

Bandits. Planning is nearly done for Chapter two and writing will commence very soon. I’ll release more details on the actual story next week so stay tuned for that. I’m excited to continue this story. It feels like my brainchild and it’s coming along nicely. A lot of progression, I like the characters and I do enjoy Fantasy so writing it is even better. There’s also so many reasons why it’s taking me so long to actually get down and write it. I have a busy teaching schedule, there’s been quite a lot of assessed work for me to complete and of course… I bought new notebooks to do my planning in (see below). So that always takes some time to start transfer notes etc over. Either way, more progress soon.img_20170225_131126_01

And finally, City Thirty-Nine. I liked writing that. I originally had a much bigger plan for it. After writing, rewriting and rewriting again I couldn’t settle on the direction to go. I’ll need some more time with my notebook to plan where it could go I think. Definitely expect more on City Thirty-Nine in the future.

Thanks again to everyone whose taken time to read these and I hope you stick around to read more content in the future! And if there is your first time here, welcome! Go check out some of the other posts and stick around a while.

Also, #2 of Dragons comes out exactly 24 from this post so make sure you check back then!

Hope you have a great week.

P.S. totally go follow these things below. More updates and more Lazy Writing Days.

Woah has it been a busy week. Highlights? Valentines was pretty sweet, we baked cakes this year. Loved it. A trip to London to see the in-laws, always fun. So really it’s been a good week. A ton of work to do but oh well, has to be done.

How’s writing going J? Very slow, I was happy posting the first part of City 39 this week (and if you haven’t read that yet, go check it out dude/dudette!) and I’m still reeling due to finishing my first chapter. A small but significant milestone for me. This week outside of everything else has been given to planning and that is going great!

So I’ve decided how to start the next chapter and even decided to toy around with chapter breaks (where a writer will break a chapter itself into parts with time jumps or perspective changes) and a more dialogue central chapter but we’ll see when it ACTUALLY comes down to writing it.

Something else rather exciting is I decided to create another flash story but this time within the same little universe as my novel idea, or ‘Bandits’ as I’ve codenamed it. I know whose perspective and roughly what I want to happen/reveal about the character it’ll be based around so I’m super happy to start and eventually share it with whoever reads this blog. Another cool little thing I stumbled upon was 50 or less stories. So essentially writing a small story with no more than 50 words. This is definitely something I want to try so I may write a couple and post them on here. It may give me more room to experiment.

That leads me to my final little point. Blog growth has been slow but steady so thank you to each and every one of you for taking the time to read my posts. Also if you have time and want to keep more up to date with Lazy Writing Days then totally go hit up the Facebook and Twitter pages.

Have a great week.

City Thirty-Nine Prologue (Flash Story)

“Mom can you ask dad to stop pacing?”

“Luke, stay calm please, just sit down. We’ll be ok.”

“You’re right! They won’t even know we’re here. According to records we moved months ago.” Luke stood still, looking at the wardrobe stacked against the door in attempt to block entry. Alexa sat quietly on the floor next to her mother. A worn carpet that had seen the years roll by you could barely tell it used to be a pale blue she thought. Unfortunately, they hadn’t properly lived here for several months, having temporarily moved due to some form of complication with the city police. Her father never really told her much about it.

“Don’t worry darling, they’ll never find us.” Luke stroked his daughter’s cheek lovingly, cracking half a smile as he gazed her eyes before standing back up to press his ear against the wall beside the door. “Nothing still.” He’d been like this for an hour or so now. Well it could have been days as far as Alexa was concerned. Time seemed to be going so slow with nothing to do. Not even the old radio worked on anything other than City Thirty-Nine radio. That mostly just played weather announcements and wanted warnings between the same repeated speech of the overseer. Alexa couldn’t stand it. All he talked about was how everyone should be grateful to be under his command and his security and how safe everyone NOW is that he’s in charge. Blah Blah Blah…

Bang Bang Bang Bang! “Open up we know she’s in there”.

Alexa’s heart dropped. Delilah leapt instantly to grab her daughter. Luke flew back and started pacing again. Alexa could barely see much of the room now, her mother’s arms clenched around her. Clinging to her journal the same way. No-one could tear her from her mother right now. She’d never felt this frightened before. She could barely focus on what was happening. Her father was shouting, pacing up and down as he always does. Her mother would shout at the city police too once and a while.

“Luke please, we have to do something.” Alexa could hear the fear in her mom’s voice now. Struggling not to break into tears she lifted one arm and wrapped it around her mom.

Crash! Alexa felt her heart stop for a moment as each time she heard the banging of the city police at the door. Crash! “We’re coming in!” The officer yelled through. “Fuck you! Fuck your city police all the hell!” Delilah released a cry of rage before silencing to look down towards Alexa. “It’s ok baby… It’s ok.” Every time Alexa had fallen over playing with her friends, or had a bad day at school her mother had stroked her hair just like she was now. This time it didn’t stop the tears. Luke was now waving around his handgun. Alexa closed her eyes and began to count to ten.

“Ten… Nine… Eight… Seven…” Crash! She whimpered. “Si…Six… Five… F…” The wardrobe slammed to the floor and the city police barged into the room. Delilah moved her arms, Alexa now able to see she caught a glimpse of her fathers bloodied face as he lay crouched against the wall. Her eyes immediately drawn to the two men rapidly approaching with huge guns aiming right at us.

“Please…” Delilah pleaded.

“Lady. Hand over the girl and we won’t have to hurt you.”

“Please no…” She sobbed

“You know you can’t have her. On the order of Overseer Julius. We will give you to the count of three.”

“Baby, it’s gonna be ok. Look at me baby” Alexa looked at her mom, the tears pouring down her face. “You’re safe and we love you”.

In a flash one of the city police counted “One.” Pulling the trigger firing a singular bullet into Delilah’s forehead. Blood splattered onto Alexa’s face as she watched the life go from Delilah. Her fatal wound instantly pouring with blood as the city police pulled her away.

“You’re coming with us.”

Alexa could only watch as one of the men strong-armed her out of the room. Her last few seconds seeing her parents covered in blood. Lifeless. Brutally murdered. Before a cold black sack was thrown over her head.

“You’re ours now.”

Chapter one finished!

Question of the week: What are you currently reading?

This year is moving so fast already. Two weekends into February and I have a week off! Result! I have a lot of planning to do for the week following for teaching but that also means I’ll have time to write a whole lot more. As of today, I sit at Chapter One/Episode One first draft finished completely for ‘Bandit’ and planning has started for Chapter Two/Episode Two. Honestly so excited about how this is going. It’s probably not going to be the next blockbuster movie (or even close) but knowing this is a story I’m creating and watch unfold in front of me is so cool.

I’m not 100% settle on the format yet but I had a cool idea (ok I may have somewhat stolen this from Tell Tales games) that I would have the story set out in Episodes (between 2-4k each), possibly release one by one either on here or whatever format suits best and in the grand scale of things it’ll form a short story (Around 10-15k words). So that’s like 4 or 5 episodes altogether (totally not like a Tell Tale game at all then…). I was thinking of using Amazon Publishing as the format to go with but I’ve read a lot of horror stories recently so I stand dubious about how to proceed. That’s research I’ll have to properly conduct around April/May time. Which is around the time I plan to have all first drafts done and possibly even started editing. I say that now but that’s just so I have a plan and goals to reach if I’m honest. We’ll see. I’m feeling confident I can reach that.

In terms of the blog I’m still happy with how things are going although I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to add plugins and utilising certain plugins so I may have to hit YouTube for some help. Other than that, views, followers, comments… keep them all coming on in! Really digging the feedback.

I also found a super cool app called “World Scribe” which I’ve started using alongside a notebook to keep track of my story. It’s basically a world builder where you can add characters, locations, items, relationships etc and it’s completely free! Handy when I don’t have my notebook near as my mind is always ticking when it comes to writing. AND NO IN APP PURCHASES WHICH IS NICE!

And finally. I have made social media account for this blog so any of you readers can follow and keep more up to date with how everything is going, or even just general thoughts. (and most likely what I’m reading currently! So we can totally discuss that.)

The Facebook page is: www.facebook.com/Lazywritingdays

The twitter is: @LazyWritingDays

I’ll be very active on both so get on down and like and follow these things for more Lazy Writing Days!

Short/flash story coming tomorrow so stay tuned!

Progress Report #1

First month done. I originally planned this to be a form of report card type post that I’d do at the end of every month but I’ve had a busy week so…

Anyway, time for a progress update. ‘Bandits’ is… coming along for sure. I’ve hit writers block a few times but I felt that was more due to lack of planning and deciding EXACTLY where I wanted to go with it but that’s something I’m in the process of doing. So I sit around 30% of the way through the first story. I like where it’s going, I feel like I didn’t originally expect certain things to happen but as I keep writing the story unfolds beneath my fingertips! Overall, I’m really happy with where I’m at. Scheduling will take a hit from next week onwards so I may not be able to get as much done but progress will continue for sure. Here’s a brief outline:

A group of bandits await by a river bed, arguing, fighting, planning but they have no idea what awaits them… The hero of the land quickly approaches and the leader of the bandits ignores our main character and underestimates the hero. One smart bandit amongst a group of restless and simple minded peers with no one to listen to his ideas… At least he has his wits about him…

The blog. Slowly but steady. So maybe I’m not hitting double figures per day (yet) but I’m happy with the content I’m putting out and already had some sweet feedback. Regardless I will always continue this on as a companion to my writing so in theory… onwards and upwards! I think I could probably upgrade and consider the design a bit more but at the time of writing this that’s for a less tired me to deal with. There’s nothing massively I’d change as I’ve always been a fan of the minimalistic design to blogs but a few tweaks here and there may be needed in the future.

Extra Extra! Read all about it! So alongside me writing ‘Bandit’ I kind of started another writing project (Classic me, never sticking to just one thing) and I totally love the story ideas I’ve came up with so far. I ran them past my fiancée and she was digging the outline I gave her and I’ve started writing like a prologue type story to introduce the world and so far? Good feedback and bad feedback. My writing could be better but that’ll come with practice and is something I’m constantly aiming to do but overall I’m super psyched about it. Here’s a brief outline of this one too:

In a dystopian city, one family hide out trying to protect their daughter in an almost empty apartment. Just as they think they’re safe… They hear a banging at the door.

The idea of this was I do the prologue meeting some of the characters then continue to write the story in normal format into a novel. The main character would be the young girl (which you’ll meet soon when I post the first part) and possibly tell the rest of the story in a journal entry type thing. We’ll see I guess. I like the idea and have quite a lot down in terms of story ideas already.

Anyway that’s enough of my rambling. This weekend couldn’t have come soon enough.

Right. I had my aims for the week. Didn’t go massively as planned. I have barely written a couple hundred words on ‘Bandit’ and while I did construct and write a flash story which I thought to be quite good. I discovered my confidence in displaying my work isn’t all that high. I wouldn’t even let my fiancée read it let alone post it anywhere. So, that needs to be something I work on and FAST.

I still aim to put the flash story out on here. I did enjoy writing it and while it may not be the best; as a first go at finishing something like that I think it’s okay. I’d like to do something like that every week (or every fortnight looking at my teaching schedule…). Assuming I can either find good prompts on reddit or like this one discover a couple prompts for stories in my old notes.

To give a brief outline I set it in a world of Half-Life-esque origins putting it in the perspective of a family living there. I always loved Half-Life (like so many others) and always wanted more from the story so heck… this may even be a theme I revisit and end up concocting several short flash stories in the same little universe. We’ll see.

I almost have the first full chapter done for my story. Doesn’t sound like the most amount considering I started it beginning of January but it’s taken a while to get typing away and sometimes to even find the time. I’m feeling good about it so far. Rolling dialogue between the main character and some of the supporting characters and starting to build the basis of a foundation for future events. Not rushing everything into it but just building that prologue-y type start without actually taking out of the story to do a ’10 years ago’ type thing. Just giving a sneak into potential for the future. Well kind of. You’ll all see eventually.

Motivation, Progress, Future.

So, my motivation has been up and down. I thought I’d nailed my work routine for when I start to write. I’d start by planning and/or researching if I needed too. So recently I spent an hour or so researching different types of bows and crossbows to fully understand the variants so I felt comfortable writing them into my story. I’d proceed to write for at least half an hour then take a break. Anywhere between 5 minutes and an hour if I’m honest. I’ve recently revisited Two Worlds on PC so I’m quite enjoying my time in that universe despite god awful voice acting at times. Returning to write for another 15 to 30 minutes before breaking again and sometimes rinse and repeat yet most times that would be the end of my writing for that day.

This is kind of very loose and the timings DEFINITELY vary if I even find the motivation to continue that day or find the time. Starting back at school this week so I now have to split my time between my writing and planning lessons/marking which will only get more hectic as the term progresses. This being said I have made significant progress on my story and I’m super happy about that. I should have a WIP title by now. I’m just going to go simple and just call it “Bandit” for now. I haven’t even thought about a proper title yet but I guess that’ll come once I’m nearly the end or I have more of an idea of where the story is going. Other than a page or two of notes I didn’t really plan exactly where I’m aiming to get too. Onwards and upwards. I’m confident it’s a story I’m sticking with.

Final side notes. I recently read over a writing prompt I completed and I was quite impressed. Kind of made me want to continue it to see where it takes me. Maybe one day. For now, the focus is on “Bandit”. I say focus… My procrastination reached a new high this week. I started considering war gaming and how I could create my own at home or with ‘Tabletop Simulator’ on Steam. Didn’t really get very far with it but I’m damn interested and persistent on trying. Updates next week? A possible flash story too? That’s the aim anyway…
